The Best Coffee Maker for College: Buyer's Guide

Small, affordable and dorm-friendly. Here are the best coffee makers for college students.

Successful students are prepared students and there’s nothing like a good cup of coffee to get you through those late night study sessions.

For any student, time is a commodity that comes in short supply. That’s why simplicity, functionality, and size are the three features that top my list when looking for the perfect coffee machine for a college student.

“A good dorm coffee maker pays for itself in a few weeks of skipped café lines.”

Of course, there are a number of great options on the market that meet these expectations, but I’ve done the homework and compiled a list of three machines I find most worthwhile to consider.

The Final Shot: My favorite is the Keurig K250. It’s a trusted brand that offers a diverse selection of patented k cups to easily and quickly brew up just about any concoction. K cups are also easy to purchase and eliminate pretty much any clean-up. The K250 is the choice for anyone looking to combine utility and style.

Not a Keurig fan? I include two other solid options to appeal to every student, no matter their study habits or drink preferences.

Top Coffee Makers for College

2026 update: The Keurig K250 and Nespresso Inissia have been discontinued. The Keurig K-Mini and the Nespresso Essenza Mini are their closest current replacements. The Black+Decker Brew 'n Go is still sold.

#1 Choice – Keurig K250 Single Serve, Programmable K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker

Keurig K250 Single Serve, Programmable K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker on a kitchen counter

Students are often working in cramped spaces, under tight budgets—that is why I find the Keurig to be the best solution to these common limitations. It’s important to consider durability, maintenance, and quality. The K250 can deliver on all of these fronts.

At 7.5 pounds and measuring 15 x 9 x 13.7 inches, the Keurig can be neatly kept atop a desk, dresser, or in a communal kitchen. The company also features many products that make k-cup storage hassle free, such as a storage drawer to go beneath the machine or a carousel to sit on top of your counter.

This machine is designed for convenience: users love being able to select a k-cup, manage their preferred settings, and enjoy a genuinely good cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in less than a minute. I find the Keurig to be well-balanced, offering just enough features, coupled with a simple design and ease of use. This comes from the machine’s touch screen, which allows users to control factors such as coffee strength.

Another reason this machine makes the top of my list is the variety it offers. As I mentioned before, the Keurig uses k-cups which can provide a wide array of beverage options, ranging from lattes, hot chocolate, tea, or plain coffee. If you wanted to brew your own ground coffee, Keurig even offers a reusable k-cup to pack your choice of blend.

The water reservoir holds 40 ounces of water, which can brew up to four cups before needing a refill. I love large water reservoirs because I always forget to refill until I’m tired and dying for a morning cup of coffee.

Some annoyances experienced by the more critical users surrounded the way Keurig’s hold the water in a heating chamber with no real way of draining it—naturally, this can be a problem for those needing to store the machine or move it from dorm to apartment. If you’re planning to keep it stationary, this really won’t matter to you.

The single-serve situation is ideal for college students who won’t be hosting dinner parties or serving a family of 4. However, Keurig understands that there may be situations where a full pot is needed, and the machine is designed to accommodate that need. Whether it’s a small fix to get you through the morning or a 30 ounce carafe to supplement some brain power during a study session, the K250 can deliver.

Keurig 250 K-Cup Pod Coffee Hot Features:

  • Single-serve coffee maker
  • Includes 4 K-Cup pods, a water filter handle + 2 water filters, and a bottle of de-scaling solution.
  • Removable 40 oz. water reservoir allows you to brew 4+ cups
  • Brews multiple K-Cup pod brew sizes (4, 6, 8, 10 oz.) and brews a Carafe (22, 26, or 30oz) using K-Carafe pods
  • Strength Control: A strength control setting allows you to brew a bolder cup using any K-Cup pod brew size
  • A black and white touch screen, brew a cup in under a minute
  • Dispenses hot water
  • A removable drip tray

#2 Choice – Nespresso Inissia Espresso Maker

Nespresso Inissia capsule machine

If you’re a student looking for a more specialized option, the Nespresso Inissia Espresso Maker is perfect for those who prefer a good Americano or espresso to get them to next semester, sanity intact.

This model is even smaller than the Keurig, weighing in at just over five pounds. It’s streamlined, compact, and features a sweet little handle to make carrying it from kitchen to desk an easy operation. Inissia’s also come in a variety of colors in case you have a student who prefers to color coordinate.

Similar to the Keurig, the Nespresso uses a line of specialized coffee capsules which makes the brewing process quick and intuitive. Preheating for this machine is only 25 seconds, which is just enough time to glance at your Facebook feed, get bored, and remember to push one of two buttons on the top of the machine: espresso or lungo. The machine holds 24 ounces of water, and also has a removable tank to make refilling a bit easier.

I think this is a great option for students partial to short order drinks who prefer a little more space and ease of movement. This model is 4.7 x 9 x 12.6 in, but packs a 19 bar high pressure pump to achieve an optimal amount of extraction.

If straight espresso just isn’t your thing, Nespresso also offers a separate milk frother, which makes a perfect companion to the Inissia, adding lattes and cappuccinos to the repertoire of possible drinks.

This model has an overwhelming amount of positive feedback; however, some complained the power cord was a bit short, so the machine has to be pretty near to a plug to reach. It is also worth bearing in mind that this machine is small, so it won’t easily service a large study group, but it will serve the more solitary studier extremely well.

Nespresso Inissia Espresso Makers Hot Features:

  • Easy insertion and ejection of capsules
  • Compact brewing unit technology
  • Fast preheating time: 25 seconds
  • 19 Bar high pressure pump
  • 2 Programmable buttons for Espresso and lungo preparation
  • Removable 24 ounce water tank
  • Folding cup tray accommodates tall recipe glasses
  • Used capsule container holds 9-11 used capsules
  • Energy efficient; A Class energy rating; Automatic power off after 9 minutes of inactivity

#3 Choice – Black and Decker DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker

Black and Decker DCM18S Brew ‘n Go Personal Coffeemaker on a kitchen counter

Where Keurig and Nespresso have style, the Black+Decker has utility. It may not be the prettiest machine on this list, but it’s perfect for those taking their coffee for a commute or a swift walk across campus.

Weighing just over two pounds, the DCM18S brews either ground or pod coffee into a convenient 15 ounce stainless steel travel mug. The filter is removable and reusable, making it easy to clean and cost effective—no need to buy those paper filters that always seem to run out when you really need your coffee.

This machine is incredibly low maintenance and excellent for those on a budget. While it’s already cheap to buy, the overhead costs remain low because there’s no specialized k-cups or pods to keep in stock. It’s also great for users who like to use their own brand of bulk beans.

The Black+Decker uses a very simple drip system, so it will run until the water in the reservoir runs out. With no pressure pumps to force the coffee from the basket, some users do advise that it can take gravity up to five minutes to finish the drip process, which can be too long for some serious go-getters.

The Black+Decker offers an easy no-frills experience for the busy and serious student.

Black & Decker DCM18S Coffeemaker Hot Features:

  • Personal coffeemaker brews directly into 15-ounce travel mug
  • Stainless-steel mug tapered to fit most vehicle cup holders
  • Permanent filter eliminates need for disposable paper filters
  • Auto shut-off; dishwasher-safe mug, mug lid, filter, and filter basket.

That concludes my picks of easy-to-use coffee machines for the busy college student. Thank you for reading and I hope you found this helpful in your search!
